LGBTQ Mardi Gras Traditions in Pensacola

The Order of Zeus was an LGBTQ+ Mardi Gras social organization in Pensacola, Florida founded in the early 1990s by local members connected to the Order of Osiris in Mobile, Alabama. Bringing traditions from Mobile’s established Mardi Gras culture, the organization helped foster a structured and celebratory social environment within Pensacola’s LGBTQ+ community.

The first ball was held in 1992 at the Zelica Grotto Hall in downtown Pensacola under the theme “Night of Firsts.” Over the years, the Order of Zeus hosted annual balls and events that became important gatherings for community members, blending pageantry, performance, and social connection.
One of the organization’s most enduring figures was Willard David “Bunnie” Hopson, who remained involved longer than any other member. During his time with the Order, he held numerous roles including Zeus, Hera, King, Queen, and Ball Captain, reflecting his significant contribution to the organization’s continuity and tradition.

The Order of Zeus continued its activities for nearly three decades, with its final ball held around 2021. Throughout its history, the organization played a meaningful role in creating space for celebration, identity, and community within Pensacola’s LGBTQ+ population.
